YouTube Premium New Features Launched – Includes Picture-in-Picture for Shorts and Smart Video Skipping
YouTube has introduced a suite of new features for its Premium subscribers, aiming to elevate the user experience by making video consumption more intuitive and flexible. These enhancements include an innovative way to skip less interesting parts of videos and the introduction of picture-in-picture mode for YouTube Shorts.
AI-Powered Video Skipping
One of the most notable features is the ability for users to quickly skip to the more engaging parts of a video. By double-tapping on the video screen, YouTube Premium subscribers can jump ahead to sections deemed more interesting based on a combination of artificial intelligence and viewer engagement data. This feature is currently live for Android users in the US, with a rollout for iOS users expected in the coming weeks.

Picture-in-Picture for YouTube Shorts
Another significant addition is the picture-in-picture (PiP) mode for YouTube Shorts. This feature allows Android Premium users to watch short-form videos while simultaneously using other apps, such as checking emails or browsing social media. This multitasking capability ensures that users can enjoy YouTube content without having to pause other activities on their devices.
Premium subscribers also gain access to YouTube’s latest experimental features. One such feature is smart downloads for Shorts, which automatically saves short-form videos to the user’s device for offline viewing. This ensures that users can enjoy their favorite content even without an internet connection.
Additionally, YouTube has introduced a conversational AI feature for Android users in the US. This AI can answer questions and suggest related content without interrupting the current video playback. However, this feature is currently limited to English videos that display an “Ask” button.
YouTube has also revamped its watch page for web users. The new design aims to make it easier to find related content, enhancing the overall viewing experience. This redesign is part of YouTube’s ongoing efforts to streamline navigation and content discovery on its platform.
YouTube Premium Benefits
YouTube Premium offers several benefits, including ad-free viewing, offline playback, and access to YouTube Music Premium. In February, YouTube announced that it had reached 100 million subscribers for both its Premium and Music services. Despite this milestone, the platform continues to innovate and add new features to attract more users to its paid services.
In its efforts to increase subscriber numbers, YouTube has also started cracking down on ad blockers. The platform has begun preventing ad-blocking apps from accessing its videos, encouraging users to switch to its Premium service for an uninterrupted viewing experience.
