Xiaomi Rumored to Re-enter Google’s Ecosystem

Xiaomi is reportedly preparing to launch a Wear OS smartwatch in 2023, marking the company’s return to Google’s ecosystem.

    Xiaomi’s History with Wear OS

The last Xiaomi smartwatch with Wear OS was the Mi Watch (2019), which used a modified version of the operating system. The Mi Watch’s adaptation of Wear OS was groundbreaking at the time, setting the stage for the Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 in 2021. However, the Mi Watch was short-lived, and its Wear OS version never saw a global release.

Following the Mi Watch, Xiaomi opted for MIUI Watch OS, a custom Android-based operating system, in its subsequent smartwatches.

A New Xiaomi Wear OS Device

Details about the upcoming Xiaomi Wear OS device are scarce, with the 9to5Google report citing unnamed sources. Since the Mi Watch’s debut, Wear OS has undergone significant improvements.

Google introduced Wear OS 3, which was re-engineered in partnership with Samsung. Samsung abandoned its Tizen OS in favor of returning to Google’s platform. This collaboration, along with Samsung’s increased market share, has resulted in a more robust app selection and greater developer support for Wear OS.

Xiaomi’s interest in Wear OS is understandable, given that the company has not achieved the same level of success in the smartwatch market as it has with its Mi Band fitness tracker.

    Balancing Battery Life and Features

A potential drawback of using Wear OS is its impact on battery life. Xiaomi’s mid-range smartwatches currently boast two-week battery life, while Wear OS devices typically last only a few days. However, a Wear OS-powered flagship smartwatch could offer mobile payments and other features that are currently missing from Xiaomi’s lineup.

The market for $200 smartwatches with long battery life but limited smart features is becoming increasingly crowded, with Huawei, Xiaomi, Amazfit, Honor, and Oppo offering similar products. Meanwhile, Redmi, Realme, and Poco are emerging as competitors in the space.

Carving a New Niche with Wear OS 3

Introducing a reasonably-priced Wear OS 3 watch could be a smart move for Xiaomi, allowing the company to establish a new niche for itself in the market.
