Xiaomi 13: High-End Smartphone with Revamped Camera Setup

Xiaomi has launched the Xiaomi 13, the successor to last year’s Xiaomi 12. True to the series, the phone is compact and high-end. While the display is only slightly larger, the phone features Qualcomm’s latest flagship System on Chip (SoC) – Snapdragon 8 Gen 2.

Though the phone shares many of the same specifications as its predecessor, Xiaomi has completely revamped the camera setup, including cooperation with Leica and new sensors. The camera module now has an optical zoom lens instead of a dedicated macro lens.

The Xiaomi 13 is available in black, white, blue (pleather finish), and jade green. The Chinese market offers limited-edition models in Flame Red, Sapphire Blue, Hurricane Yellow, Jungle Green, and Cement Gray. The front and back of the phone are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass Victus, but they tend to attract fingerprints. The glossy polished aluminium frame is also a magnet for fingerprints.

The phone is very well-built, with tight and even gaps on the chassis. The SIM slot’s cover is made of the same material as the frame, making it look and feel clean. The camera module sets itself apart from other Xiaomi phones and is prominently featured on the back, sticking out 2.25 mm (0.09 inches) from the body. The Xiaomi 13 has an IP68 rating, making it water-resistant and protected from dust.

Specifications: The Xiaomi 13 has a USB-C port that doesn’t support video output over a cable, but it is capable of On-The-Go (OTG) and supports external peripherals and storage devices. The interface only supports USB 2.0. The phone lacks an audio jack or a microSD slot, but it has an IR blaster for remotely controlling multimedia devices, air conditioners, and cameras. The phone also features Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and Ultra-Wideband (UWB) capability for use as a digital car key.

In China, the flagship phone is available in four memory/storage configurations: 8/128 GB, 8/256 GB, 12/256 GB, and 12/512 GB. The international version will likely offer fewer options.

Software: The Xiaomi 13 comes with Android 13 and MIUI 14. The Chinese version of the phone comes with many pre-installed Chinese apps, but Google Play Store is missing. It can be easily added later using an APK. The phone comes with basic Google services, but Android Auto doesn’t work on the import version. The import version only supports system languages Chinese, Tibetan, Uyghur, and English. However, if purchased from TradingShenzhen, Google Play Store will come pre-installed.

The device has Widevine L1 certification, making it possible to view DRM-protected content in HD. At the time of this review, the security patches were last updated on December 1, 2022, and Xiaomi has not announced the length of updates it plans to offer. However, it is expected to provide three Android updates and four years of quarterly security patches.

Pricing: The international version of the Xiaomi 13 is expected to arrive in March 2023, costing €999 (US$1073). If purchasing an import model, it can be obtained for less than €800 (US$860) from retailers.
