Wimbledon Unveils AI-Powered ‘Catch Me Up’ Tool for Real-Time Match Updates
Tennis enthusiasts won’t miss a moment of the action at Wimbledon 2024, thanks to the introduction of a ground-breaking AI-powered tool called “Catch Me Up.” This innovative feature, powered by IBM’s Watsonx generative AI platform, aims to bring fans closer to the tournament, ensuring they stay updated on all the latest developments.
The All-England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) has launched Catch Me Up to provide real-time updates and personalized summaries for each player. Available on the Wimbledon.com website and mobile app, this tool uses generative AI to create player-based updates in the form of “cards.” These cards offer short-form commentary on players’ progress throughout the championships, starting on July 1.
During a media briefing, Chris Clements, Digital Products Lead at the AELTC, highlighted that Wimbledon attracts around 650 million fans worldwide. However, many interesting or less-publicized stories often go unnoticed, especially during the tournament’s early stages when multiple matches occur simultaneously. Catch Me Up addresses this by providing comprehensive updates, ensuring fans stay informed about all matches.
Advanced AI Integration
Kevin Farrar, Head of Sport Partnerships at IBM UK, explained that the AI model integrates structured tournament data with unstructured external sources, such as analytics from Sportsradar, to deliver accurate and insightful summaries. This feature not only highlights high-profile matches but also brings attention to lesser-known players, including those in junior and wheelchair competitions.
For an authentic experience, the Catch Me Up tool has been specially trained in the Wimbledon tone of voice, adhering to traditional terms such as “Gentleman’s” and “Ladies” draws. This attention to detail ensures that updates resonate with the tournament’s prestigious heritage.
The launch coincides with IBM’s new research indicating that the majority of tennis fans view generative AI positively. A survey of over 18,000 fans revealed that 55% believe AI technology will benefit the sport, with 75% expecting it to enhance game strategy, coaching, and talent identification.
Wimbledon 2024’s Catch Me Up tool marks a significant advancement in fan engagement, leveraging AI to provide timely and detailed updates on all matches. This innovation ensures that no fan misses out on the excitement, bringing them closer to the action than ever before.
