WhatsApp Video Calling with Screen Sharing and Expanded Group Calls
WhatsApp, the popular messaging platform owned by Meta, has rolled out significant upgrades to WhatsApp video calling capabilities. These new features aim to make WhatsApp a more robust competitor against platforms like Zoom, FaceTime, and Google Meet.
One of the most notable enhancements is the introduction of screen sharing. This feature is particularly useful for collaborative activities such as watching videos together, sharing non-shareable content, or assisting with technical support for family members. The screen-sharing function also supports audio sharing, enabling users to communicate seamlessly while viewing each other’s screens.
WhatsApp has also increased the participant limit for video calls to 32 people. This significant upgrade from the previous cap of eight participants, which was introduced during the pandemic in 2020, applies across all platforms. This expanded capacity makes WhatsApp a more attractive option for larger group calls, whether for social, educational, or professional purposes.
Another valuable addition is the speaker spotlight feature. During group calls, the current speaker’s image is highlighted and placed first in the participant row, making it easier to identify who is speaking. This feature, already standard on many other video calling platforms, enhances the user experience by reducing confusion during conversations.
WhatsApp has also upgraded its audio quality by switching to the MLow codec. This new compression technology offers clearer calls with better noise and echo cancellation, which is especially beneficial in noisy environments. Additionally, video calls can now stream in higher resolution, provided the network connection is fast enough to support it.
These updates are part of WhatsApp’s ongoing efforts to improve user experience and functionality. By incorporating features like screen sharing, increased participant limits, and improved audio quality, WhatsApp aims to provide a more comprehensive and competitive video calling solution.
With these enhancements, WhatsApp is set to become a stronger contender in the video calling space. The new features not only improve the platform’s usability but also make it more versatile for various types of interactions, from personal chats to professional meetings.
