Wearables Menstrual Health Study Shows Potential
Revolutionary Femtech Features on Wearables
New biometric cycle tracking features, available on devices like the Apple Watch Series 8 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 5, are proving to be invaluable in the realm of women’s health, according to a recent study. The research, conducted by Harvard University, utilized Apple cycle tracking data and discovered that many women experience health conditions that could lead to severe health consequences.
Harvard’s Research on Menstrual Health
The study, conducted by Harvard Chan School, analyzed data from the Apple Women’s Health Study, an opt-in program. The research found that 12% of participants reported a polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis, which is associated with a four times higher risk of endometrial hyperplasia (pre-cancer of the uterus) and a 2.5 times higher risk of uterine cancer.
The study’s primary objective is to enhance the understanding of menstrual cycles and their connection to various health issues, including PCOS, infertility, and menopausal transition.
Contributing to the Study via iPhones and Apple Watches
Participants in the study shared their cycle tracking data and other health information from their iPhones or Apple Watches. The Apple Watch Series 8, in particular, utilizes body temperature data to retrospectively track ovulation, focusing on detecting PCOS and identifying shifts in cycles.
Additional Findings
The study also revealed that 5.7% of participants took five or more years to achieve cycle regularity after their first period. These participants had more than double the risk of endometrial hyperplasia and over 3.5 times the risk of uterine cancer compared to those whose cycles became regular within one year.
Apple’s Commitment to Women’s Health
Sumbul Desai, MD, Vice President of Health at Apple, acknowledged the importance of these insights in shaping features like cycle deviation notifications and enhancing period and fertile window predictions within Cycle Tracking. Desai stated, “We envision a world where everyone with a period sees it for what it is: an amazing insight into their health that should be celebrated, not stigmatized.”
Apple continues to build on this work by introducing new features such as retrospective ovulation estimates on the Apple Watch Series 8 and Apple Watch Ultra. These innovations make critical information about the menstrual cycle more accessible to users through devices they already use daily.
The Impact on Women’s Health Outcomes
The study aims to encourage individuals to discuss cycle irregularity with their healthcare providers at an earlier stage, ultimately improving women’s health outcomes and reducing risks associated with menstrual irregularities.
