Twitter’s Algorithm Reportedly Favors Select Users
While average users are losing their coveted blue checkmarks and CEO Elon Musk talks about “equality for all,” there appears to be a hidden group of 35 VIPs whose tweets are given preferential treatment by Twitter. According to a report by Platformer, the social media giant does not seem to be genuinely committed to equal treatment of users, as this exclusive list of VIPs receives enhanced visibility on the platform.
The Platformer Report and the VIP List
Platformer obtained the list of 35 VIP users through company documents acquired from internal sources. The list has evolved over time, and to protect the identities of their sources, Platformer has chosen not to publish the entire list. However, the report does reveal the names of 14 members from the list, including:
- Ben Shapiro, Daily Wire founder
- Conservative commentator @catturd2
- NBA superstar LeBron James
- US Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
- President Joe Biden
- YouTuber Mr. Beast
- Twitter’s eccentric user @dril
- Menswear writer @dieworkwear
The Purpose of the VIP List and Engagement Monitoring
The VIP list was created to track user engagement on the platform as people interacted with these influential users. It also aimed to study how modifications to Twitter’s recommendation algorithm would impact engagement. In December last year, Musk noticed a decline in his own engagement on the platform. Consequently, an engineer developed an initial list of several dozen VIPs to monitor website traffic. However, Musk was not satisfied with the results.
In February, Twitter introduced a system to prioritize Musk’s tweets over others, while also promoting the tweets of the other VIPs, albeit to a lesser degree.
Contradicting Musk’s Vision for Twitter
These manipulations of Twitter’s algorithm seem to contradict Musk’s promises of dismantling the “lords and peasants” system that has characterized the platform in the past. This approach suggests a disorganized CEO attempting to fix a platform that was already flawed before his acquisition.
Twitter’s Declining Value
Despite Musk’s efforts to revitalize the platform, he has admitted that Twitter’s current value is less than half of the $44 billion he paid for it. The revelation of the secret VIP list and the preferential treatment these users receive could further damage the platform’s reputation and contribute to its decline.
The disclosure of Twitter’s covert group of 35 VIPs and the preferential treatment they receive raises questions about the platform’s commitment to treating all users equally. As the platform’s value continues to decline, Twitter’s pursuit of equality, as advocated by CEO Elon Musk, appears to be at odds with its actions. The platform’s future success may depend on its ability to reconcile these contradictions and genuinely address the concerns of its user base.
