Twitter AI Project Gains Traction with Elon Musk’s Support
Twitter has reportedly been making progress in its in-house artificial intelligence (AI) project. If you recall, it onboarded former DeepMind researchers over a month back. Business Insider reports that Elon Musk purchased 10,000 GPUs for use in one of Twitter’s two remaining data centers, signaling his commitment to the project. The investment in datacenter-grade GPUs suggests that Twitter has plans to use them extensively for AI-related work.
Generative AI Development and Potential Applications
The AI project in question revolves around developing a generative AI system that Twitter would train on its vast dataset. While the company’s plans for utilizing the technology remain unclear, it could potentially improve search functionality or aid in reconstructing Twitter’s advertising business. This development casts an interesting light on Musk’s recent call for a temporary halt to AI development.
Musk’s Discontent with OpenAIÂ and the Rise of a Rivalry
Elon Musk, who co-founded the AI research organization OpenAI in 2015, has been a vocal critic of the institution, particularly its for-profit subsidiary, OpenAI Limited Partnership. A Semafor report suggests that the rift between Musk and OpenAI may be personal, tracing back to 2018 when Musk expressed concern that OpenAI was lagging behind Google. He reportedly proposed that he should run the organization, an idea that was rejected by Sam Altman and the other co-founders.
The Fallout from Musk’s Departure from OpenAI
Although both parties claim that Musk left OpenAI due to conflicts of interest involving Tesla, the Semafor report reveals that Musk ceased funding OpenAI after his departure, despite having promised approximately $1 billion. OpenAI was left scrambling for funds, eventually establishing a for-profit subsidiary and securing a $1 billion investment from Microsoft in 2019. When OpenAI’s ChatGPT gained public attention in November, Musk was allegedly infuriated, cutting off OpenAI’s access to Twitter’s data the following month. Now, it seems Musk is determined to challenge his former organization directly.
