Proton Mail Scribe, Privacy-Focused AI Writing Assistant, Introduced
Proton Mail has unveiled a new AI-powered feature designed to enhance the email drafting experience while prioritizing user privacy. The latest addition, Proton Scribe, serves as an AI writing assistant that can help users compose and refine their email drafts. Unlike other AI tools from Google and Microsoft, Proton Scribe is built with a stringent focus on privacy, ensuring that it doesn’t train on your inbox data. This aligns with Proton Mail’s commitment to zero-access encryption, meaning the company does not save or log any information from users’ email drafts.
The development of Scribe was driven by user demand. According to a recent survey conducted by Proton, a writing assistant was among the most-requested features. This feedback led to the creation of Scribe, which offers a secure alternative to existing generative AI tools. Users have the option to run Scribe locally if their system is compatible, or on Proton’s no-log servers for those who prefer not to use local resources. The assistant leverages open-source models and code, allowing independent researchers to perform privacy and security audits to verify its safety.
Accessing Scribe is straightforward. Users can click the pencil icon in the Proton Mail composer to activate the tool. Once activated, users can dictate what they want to convey in an email, and Scribe will generate a draft. The tool includes features like Shorten and Proofread to help condense and clean up drafts. Additionally, it offers an option to adjust the tone of emails, making them more formal with a single click. Users retain full control, as they can review and tweak drafts before sending them out.
Currently, Proton Scribe fully supports English and is gradually being rolled out to eligible users. Visionary and Lifetime subscribers can access this feature at no additional cost. For users on Proton’s Business plans, including Mail Essentials, Mail Professional, and Proton Business Suite, Scribe is available for a free 14-day trial. After the trial period, the tool costs $3 per month per user.
Proton Mail Scribe positions it as a strong competitor in the AI email tool market, especially for users who prioritize privacy. The tool’s ability to function without compromising user data offers a unique selling point in an era where data security is increasingly important.
