Picsart and Getty Launch AI Image Generator Trained on Licensed Content
Picsart, a leading photo-editing platform, has partnered with Getty Images to develop an AI image generator exclusively trained on licensed stock images. This collaboration aims to provide a “responsible, commercially-safe” alternative to existing AI image generation platforms. The generated images will come with full commercial rights, addressing legal concerns regarding copyright violations in AI-generated content.
The new service will be available only to paid Picsart subscribers, ensuring that all generated images are legally safe for commercial use. This approach recalls Adobe’s Firefly AI model, which is also trained on stock images, although not exclusively. Recently, Adobe faced backlash after updating its terms of service to include the right to access and use users’ work for AI training, leading to swift amendments following public outcry.
By training their AI model solely on licensed stock images, Picsart and Getty aim to avoid similar controversies. This strategy ensures that regular Picsart users’ creations are not used for training or generating new images. Grant Farhall, Chief Product Officer at Getty Images, emphasized the importance of maintaining high standards of commercial safety, stating, “It allows creators to bring their visions to life while maintaining the highest standards of commercial safety.”
Getty Images has also committed to fair practices by compensating professional photographers whose work is included in the dataset. A company representative confirmed that creators would be compensated annually, ensuring that their contributions are recognized and rewarded.
The Picsart x Getty Images AI image generator is set to launch later this year, although a specific release date has not yet been announced. The service will be accessible via Picsart’s API services, offering a seamless integration for users looking to generate commercially-safe images.
The partnership between Picsart and Getty Images marks a significant advancement in AI image generation, prioritizing legal safety and fair compensation for creators. This new tool is set to provide businesses and creators with reliable, high-quality images that can be used commercially without legal complications.
