Photoshop AI Image Generation Launched
Adobe has launched Photoshop AI Image Generation, enabling users to generate images from text prompts, akin to the capabilities of Dall-E and Midjourney. This new functionality, powered by Adobe’s Firefly, was initially teased in April and has now been widely released, stirring both excitement and controversy in the creative community.
With this update, Photoshop users can create images from scratch by simply typing a description into the generative AI tool. For example, inputting “Dramatic low angle view of a steamship from the 1800s in a storm with large waves and lightning” in various styles like anime, watercolor, sketch, and realistic produces impressive results. However, as with most AI-generated art, some minor anomalies may be present upon close inspection. The advantage here is that these images are created directly within Photoshop, allowing users to easily correct any imperfections.
Previously, Photoshop’s Generative Fill feature was limited to modifying specific parts of an image—adding, extending, or removing elements. Now, the tool’s capabilities have expanded to allow for the complete creation of images from text prompts, which can then be further edited.
The feature utilizes the Firefly Image 3 model, which has been at the center of recent debates among artists. Concerns arose from Adobe’s terms of service, which some creators interpreted as allowing the company to use their work for training its AI models without permission. In response, Adobe reaffirmed its “commitment to creator-friendly AI,” emphasizing that it does not train its models on customer content. Adobe’s AI ethics principles focus on accountability, responsibility, and transparency, ensuring that the AI respects creators’ rights.
Enhanced Features for Designers
In addition to the text-to-image generation, Adobe has introduced several other enhancements across its suite of tools. Photoshop now includes an “Enhance Detail” feature within Generative Fill, providing even finer control over image modifications. For Illustrator, the new Generative Shape Fill adds detailed vectors in a designer’s unique style, while Enhanced Text to Pattern allows for the creation of custom vector patterns. The Style Reference feature helps maintain a consistent design language across different projects.
Furthermore, Adobe has rolled out a Mockup tool, enabling designers to create high-quality visual prototypes of their artwork on objects such as product packaging. This tool enhances the realism of product presentations and marketing materials. Enhanced selection capabilities and other usability improvements have also been added to streamline the design process.
