Nikon has introduced the Z 6 III, its latest full-frame mirrorless camera, packed with numerous advancements and improvements over its predecessor, the Z 6 II. Partially Stacked CMOS Sensor
The Nikon Z 6 III debuts a groundbreaking partially stacked full-frame sensor. This technology borrows elements from fully stacked CMOS chips, such as onboard memory and high-speed processing circuitry, but utilizes a unique arrangement. Although it does not match the scan rates of fully stacked sensors like those in the Nikon Z 8, the Z 6 III can still freeze action effectively using its electronic shutter. However, it relies on a mechanical focal plane shutter for flash sync, operating up to 1/200-second.

Powered by the Expeed 7 processor, the Z 6 III boasts a 20% faster autofocus than the Z 6 II’s dual Expeed 6 chips. It features intelligent 3D Tracking technology, enabling precise focus on moving subjects such as people, animals, pets, airplanes, and trains. The camera supports up to 20fps continuous shooting with tracking at 14-bit RAW quality and can capture full-resolution 24.5MP JPGs at up to 60fps. Additionally, a 120fps tracking mode is available using an APS-C (DX) crop from the sensor, though limited to JPG capture.

The Z 6 III includes dual card slots—a primary CFexpress (Type B) slot and a secondary UHS-II SDXC slot—providing flexibility and faster write speeds for burst capture and RAW video recording. In-body image stabilization (IBIS) is standard, offering up to eight stops of compensation for steady handheld shooting. This system adjusts performance based on the point of focus and includes a 96MP multi-shot mode for enhanced resolution and color fidelity, albeit requiring a tripod and subject stillness.
Build and Durability
Weighing 1.65 pounds, the Z 6 III is lighter than the Z 8 but maintains robust construction with a magnesium alloy chassis and weather-sealed design. Although Nikon does not provide an IP rating, the camera is designed to withstand challenging conditions, mirroring the durability of the Z 8.
Advanced Viewfinder and Display
The Z 6 III features a new electronic viewfinder (EVF) with a wide color gamut covering the DCI-P3 color space and HDR HLG video preview. It boasts a sharp 5.76 million-dot resolution, switchable 60/120fps refresh rate, and high peak brightness of 4,000 nits. The rear display is a 3.2-inch, 2.1 million-dot vari-angle touchscreen, allowing flexibility for various shooting angles, including selfies and vlogs.
Connectivity and Smart Features
The camera supports multiple connectivity options, including automated photo offloading to the Nikon Imaging Cloud via home Wi-Fi and Ethernet through a USB-C dongle. The Imaging Cloud integrates with Adobe Creative Cloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, and OneDrive, facilitating seamless media transfer to editing stations. The Z 6 III also continues to support smartphone connectivity via the Nikon Snapbridge app.
Creative and Professional Video Capabilities
The Z 6 III caters to videographers with its ability to record internal ProRes RAW, N-RAW (Nikon RAW), ProRes 4:2:2, and HEVC footage. It supports resolutions up to 6K60 in N-RAW, 6K30 in ProRes RAW, 5.4K30 in ProRes 422, and 5.4K60 in HEVC, utilizing the full sensor width. For slow motion, the camera captures 4K120, though with a significant APS-C crop. Continuous recording extends up to 125 minutes, and it supports line-level recording via its mic input for direct audio capture from soundboards.
Availability and Pricing
The Nikon Z 6 III is priced at $2,499.95 for the body alone, with a kit option featuring the Nikkor Z 24-70mm F4 S lens available for $3,099.95. The camera is expected to ship later this month, though availability may extend into early July.
