Nikon to Leverage RED Technology for a Competitive Edge
In a strategic move poised to shake up the video camera market, Nikon has announced plans to incorporate RED camera technology into its future models. This comes on the heels of Nikon’s $85 million acquisition of RED, a leader in professional video technology. While the implications of this purchase were initially unclear, Nikon President Muneaki Tokunari recently shed light on the company’s vision in an interview with Nippon.
Nikon has been experiencing a resurgence, particularly with its advanced mirrorless cameras like the Nikon Z8. The company is seeing robust sales growth in regions such as China and South Asia, driven by a rising demand for high-quality interchangeable lens cameras.
The acquisition of RED places Nikon in a prime position to enhance its video offerings. RED is renowned for its “non-debayered” raw video recording technology and the R3D raw codec, known as REDCode RAW. This technology could potentially be integrated into existing Nikon models, such as the Nikon Z9, via firmware updates. Cameras like the Z6 III, Z8, and Z9 might soon support 16-bit REDCode RAW video, significantly elevating their video performance.
One of the most exciting prospects is the development of Nikon’s own image sensors. Currently, Nikon uses Sony sensors in its cameras, but plans are underway to build semiconductor plants across Japan to manufacture its own chips. This development would not only give Nikon greater control over its technology but also potentially lead to improvements in dynamic range and color profiles for both photography and videography.
The collaboration with RED could also lead to new hardware innovations. While the timeline for Nikon to produce its own sensors is still uncertain, the potential for a Nikon Z-mount RED camera or a RED-inspired modular Nikon video camera is highly anticipated. Such developments would position Nikon as a formidable competitor in the video camera market, directly challenging industry leaders Sony and Canon.
