Apple Unveils New MacBook Pro Models & M3 Chips
On the eve of October 30, 2023, Apple rolled the dice once more in the silicon chip battle during its aptly named “Scary Fast” event. The tech giant showcased its latest marvels, the 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models, now empowered by the newly minted M3 series chips – the standard M3, the M3 Pro, and the M3 Max. This new line-up of chips is poised to redefine the MacBook’s computational prowess.

The new MacBook Pros don a Liquid Retina XDR display that pushes the boundaries with a 20 percent brighter SDR content, morphing every visual into a spectacle. Additionally, the built-in 1080p camera and a six-speaker sound system are set to elevate the user experience to a concert-like ambiance. The claim of up to 22 hours of battery life is the cherry on top, especially for the digital nomads and binge-watchers.
Diving into the heart – the chips – the standard M3 flaunts up to an 8-core CPU and a 10-core GPU. Scaling up, the M3 Pro boasts up to a 12-core CPU and an 18-core GPU, while the M3 Max reigns with up to a 16-core CPU and a towering 40-core GPU. The memory allocation is just as impressive, with up to 24GB, 36GB, and a whopping 128GB of unified memory for the M3, M3 Pro, and M3 Max respectively.
Apple’s statement that the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro runs up to 60 percent faster than its predecessor with the M1 chip, is a testament to the leaps in innovation Apple has made within a short span. The 14-inch and 16-inch M3 Pro MacBook Pro models also pack a punch with up to 40 percent increased speed compared to the M1 Pro model. For those in pursuit of unyielding performance, the M3 Max MacBook Pro models stand tall with up to 2.5x faster speeds than the 16-inch MacBook Pro with M1 Max, and a great up to 11x faster speeds than the erstwhile fastest Intel-based MacBook Pro.
These chips are crafted using 3-nanometer technology, paving the path for a faster, more efficient next-gen GPU. The “Dynamic Caching” technology is a noteworthy mention, an innovation where the GPU smartly allocates the use of local memory in hardware in real time, ensuring a meticulous memory management for each task.
Aesthetics too had its share of the spotlight with the introduction of a new color—Space Black, albeit exclusively for the M3 Pro and M3 Max models. The finish on these models isn’t just about the looks; it’s engineered to greatly reduce fingerprints courtesy of an anodization seal. The tradition continues with the Silver color, while the 14-inch M3 model also enjoys a Space Gray variant.
With orders kicking off immediately, the countdown begins for the launch on November 7.
The pricing begins at $1,599 for the 14-inch M3 MacBook Pro, $1,999 for the 14-inch M3 Pro, and $2,499 for the 16-inch model, with a nod to the education sector with special pricing.
