Microsoft Edge Unveils New Collaboration Tool and AutoPlay Blocking Update

Public Beta Introduces Workspace Sharing, Improved Autoplay Blocking, and More

Microsoft Edge has introduced several new features in a public beta, aimed at enhancing collaboration, transparency, and internet usability. One notable feature is Workspaces, initially announced in October 2022, which enables users to share groups of browser tabs with others. Users can create a Workspace window with a custom name and color theme, collect desired tabs, and then share a hyperlink to the Workspace. Recipients can contribute additional tabs before sharing it back.

Workspaces do not share browser data, logins, cookies, or passwords – only the tabs are visible. To access Workspaces, users must have a Microsoft account and an up-to-date Edge browser on PC or Mac. As it is currently a limited preview, not everyone can try the feature, but Microsoft plans to expand access over the coming months. Workspace sharing is currently limited to five invitees.

The next significant addition is the updated Autoplay Blocking feature. The new Block setting stops all automatic media playback on websites, whereas the previous Limit option only stopped autoplaying videos on previously visited sites. However, Autoplay Blocking is currently limited to the Canary Channel version of Microsoft Edge, with a planned expansion of user availability.

Browser Essentials, a less restrictive feature, will replace the Performance Hub as a statistics panel. It offers details on performance and safety features like Efficiency Mode, Sleeping Tabs, and SmartScreen scanning. Users can view the number of websites Edge scanned for malware and the quantity of dangerous downloads blocked. Browser Essentials will be available on Edge 112, currently rolling out, and can also be accessed via the Canary or Dev channels of the Windows Insider Program.

As these features are still in development, Microsoft is encouraging users to provide feedback through various methods within each feature. The company has yet to announce an official launch date for these updates.
