Meta AI Image Labels Revised Following Backlash

Meta has responded to significant criticism from photographers by revising its Meta AI image labels system. The company announced it would change the “Made with AI” labels to “AI Info” after numerous complaints about non-AI-generated content being incorrectly flagged.

Earlier this year, Meta introduced the “Made with AI” labels in response to criticism from its Oversight Board about the “manipulated media” policy. The labels aimed to identify images created or modified using generative AI tools, relying on “industry standard” signals to detect AI involvement. However, photographers quickly observed that images with minimal AI modifications were also being flagged, leading to widespread dissatisfaction.

Tests by PetaPixel highlighted that even minor edits using Adobe’s generative fill tool in Photoshop could trigger the “Made with AI” label. Simple retouching to remove small imperfections was enough for an image to be flagged, despite the changes being insignificant. This mislabeling caused frustration among photographers who felt their work was being inaccurately represented.

In response to this feedback, Meta announced it would replace the “Made with AI” labels with “AI Info” across its platforms, including Facebook and Instagram. The company acknowledged that the original labels “weren’t always aligned with people’s expectations and didn’t always provide enough context.”

Meta explained that some content, even with minor AI modifications such as retouching tools, included indicators that triggered the “Made with AI” badge. “While we work with companies across the industry to improve the process so our labeling approach better matches our intent, we’re updating the ‘Made with AI’ label to ‘AI info’ across our apps, which people can click for more information,” the company stated.

The updated “AI Info” label aims to provide clearer context without detailing the specific AI tools used on the image. The contextual menu, accessible by tapping the badge, will remain unchanged. This menu offers a general description of generative AI and notes that Meta may apply the label “when people share content that has AI signals our systems can read.”

Meta’s decision to revise its AI labeling system underscores the broader challenges tech companies face as they integrate AI technologies into their platforms. The balance between transparency and user experience is delicate, and Meta’s move to update its labels is a step towards addressing these challenges.

By refining the labeling process and collaborating with industry partners, Meta aims to create a more accurate and user-friendly system. This effort is particularly crucial as the use of AI in content creation continues to grow, and the need for clear and accurate labeling becomes increasingly important.
