The long-awaited stealth action game, The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, is finally nearing its release. Daedalic has announced that the game will be available on May 25th for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S platforms.

A Nintendo Switch version is expected to be released later this year. This fresh take on J.R.R. Tolkien’s fantasy world offers a different experience for those who may not have been drawn to the hack-and-slash style of Monolith’s Middle-earth games.
A Unique Gollum-Centric Storyline
In The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, players will control Gollum in a previously untold story, chronicling his search for the One Ring during the early events of The Fellowship of the Ring. As Gollum is not a fighter, the gameplay focuses on stealth, climbing, and evasion.
Additionally, players will face the challenge of navigating the conflict within Gollum’s fractured psyche, choosing between succumbing to his darker desires or clinging to the remnants of Smeagol’s kindness. Although the game is based on the books, it will feature familiar characters and a world heavily influenced by Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings film adaptations.
A Lengthy Journey to Completion
The development of Gollum has been a long process, with the game initially unveiled in 2019 and initially expected to launch in 2021. The COVID-19 pandemic hampered progress, and even a tentative September 2022 release was postponed. Daedalic cited the need for additional time to polish the game as the reason for the delay, which was expected to last only “a few months.”
Potential Benefit from Renewed Interest in Tolkien’s World
The timing of Gollum’s release may prove advantageous, as the Lord of the Rings franchise has experienced a resurgence in popularity recently. In 2019, Amazon’s Lord of the Rings TV series was still in development, and the last major Tolkien game, Middle-earth: Shadow of War, was no longer the focus of fans. Fast forward to 2023, and Amazon’s The Rings of Power series has become a massive hit, while movie effects studio Weta Workshop is developing its own game set in the franchise. This renewed fascination with the world of hobbits and orcs could help boost interest in and demand for The Lord of the Rings: Gollum.
