iOS 18 Introduces Live Video Support for Emergency SOS
Apple unveiled numerous exciting features for iOS 18 during its WWDC 2024 event, and among these is a significant upgrade to the Emergency SOS feature: live video support. This enhancement aims to improve emergency response by allowing dispatchers to see live video feeds from the scene, providing them with better context to offer appropriate assistance.
Enhanced Emergency SOS Feature
In its press release for iOS 18, Apple detailed the new functionality, which will enable users to “share context through streaming video and recorded media” during an emergency call. This means that when an iPhone user places an emergency call, they can provide real-time video to emergency dispatchers, giving them a clearer understanding of the situation.
To initiate an emergency call on an iPhone, users need to press and hold the power (or side) button along with either volume button. This action triggers a countdown on the screen, and if the buttons are held continuously, the call is placed. With iOS 18, it’s expected that options to start a live stream or send recorded video will be available on the screen during the call.
What to Expect in iOS 18
The live video support for Emergency SOS is just one of many new features coming with iOS 18. Other highly anticipated updates include the ability to lock specific apps, customize home screen layouts, and integrate features currently managed by third-party apps, such as password management and audio transcription, directly into Apple’s software.
iOS 18 will also introduce advanced Apple Intelligence tools, offering significant improvements to Siri’s capabilities. However, it is important to note that these Apple Intelligence features will initially be available only on two iPhone models.
Currently, iOS 18 is available as a developer beta. The public beta phase is expected to begin next month, allowing more users to test out the new features. The official rollout of iOS 18 is anticipated in September, coinciding with the launch of the iPhone 16 series.
iOS 18’s live video support for Emergency SOS marks a major step forward in enhancing user safety and emergency response efficiency. Combined with a host of other innovative features, this update is set to significantly improve the iPhone user experience.
