YouTube Music Introduces Hum-to-Search Feature on Android
YouTube Music for Android is rolling out an innovative new feature that allows users to search for songs by humming, singing, or playing the melody on an instrument. This long-anticipated tool, first reported by 9to5Google, marks a significant enhancement in the app’s functionality and user experience. The feature has been in the testing phase since March and is now being made available through a server-side update with version 7.02 of the app.
How to Use the Hum-to-Search Feature
The new tool is designed for simplicity and ease of use. To start using it, users need to tap the magnifying glass icon located in the top-right corner of the YouTube Music app. Next to the microphone icon, there is a new waveform icon. Tapping this icon activates the hum-to-search feature. Users can then begin humming, singing, or playing the melody of the song they are trying to find. The app quickly processes the input and displays a fullscreen results page with detailed information about the song, including the cover art, song name, artist, album, release year, and other pertinent data.
The hum-to-search tool leverages advanced AI technology, building upon the Pixel’s Now Playing feature. This feature uses AI to match the sound to the original recording, ensuring accurate and quick identification of songs. The AI technology is sophisticated enough to recognize a wide range of sounds, making it easier for users to find songs even if they don’t remember the exact lyrics or title.
While this feature is new to YouTube Music, it is not entirely unprecedented in the world of music streaming and search. Google Search introduced a similar tool in 2020, allowing users to hum or sing to find songs. The regular YouTube app also began offering a comparable feature last year. Additionally, Deezer, another online music streaming platform, released its “hum to search” tool in 2022. These features highlight a growing trend in the industry to integrate AI-driven search capabilities that enhance user convenience and experience.
The introduction of the hum-to-search feature is expected to significantly improve user experience on YouTube Music. Finding a song by its melody is a common need among music listeners, and this tool addresses that need efficiently. By allowing users to hum, sing, or play a tune to search for songs, YouTube Music makes it easier for users to discover and enjoy music without needing to remember specific details.
This feature not only adds a layer of convenience but also showcases YouTube Music’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to enhance its service. Users can now access a more intuitive and interactive way of exploring music, aligning with modern trends in digital music consumption.
Currently, the hum-to-search feature is available on the Android version of YouTube Music. There is no information yet on when this feature will be released for iOS users, but it is expected to be available in the near future.
