Huawei Mate X3 foldable phone launched

Huawei Mate X3 foldable phone launched

Huawei Mate X3, a sleek and light book-style folding phone that redefines portability.

Huawei has recently unveiled the Mate X3, its latest book-style folding phone, in China alongside the non-folding flagship P60 series. This new foldable device boasts impressive design and advanced features, making it a strong competitor in the folding phone market.

    Mate X3: Thinner and Lighter

The Mate X3 features a 6.4-inch cover screen that opens up to reveal a 7.85-inch inner screen. Despite having two screens, the Mate X3 weighs only 239 grams (8.4 ounces) and has a thickness of 5.3 millimeters when unfolded. This makes it both lighter than the iPhone 14 Pro Max and the thinnest foldable phone currently available. In comparison, Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 weighs 263 grams and has a width of 6.3mm when unfolded.

Flexible Free-Stop Hinge and Impressive Camera Specs

Huawei has incorporated a free-stop hinge into the Mate X3, allowing users to fold the phone into various positions. This feature enables Flex-mode style capabilities, similar to those found in Samsung foldables. The Mate X3 also showcases a circular camera bump, equipped with a 50-megapixel primary camera, a 13-megapixel ultrawide camera, and a 12-megapixel periscope-style telephoto camera capable of 5x optical zoom.

    IPX8 Rating and Satellite Connectivity

One of the most significant upgrades for the Mate X3 is its IPX8 rating, a rare feature among foldable phones. The only other foldable phone with this rating is Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4 series. The IPX8 rating ensures that the device can withstand immersion in over 1 meter (3.2 feet) of water.

Additionally, the Mate X3 offers satellite connectivity, allowing users to send and receive messages via satellite when outside the range of their mobile network. This feature was first introduced in the iPhone 14 series.

    Return to Book-Style Foldable Design

The Mate X3 signifies Huawei’s return to book-style folding phones. In contrast, last year’s Mate XS 2 featured a single-screen wraparound design. This shift back to the inward-folding design, pioneered by Samsung, suggests that Huawei sees the book-style format as the future of foldable phones.

    Pricing and International Launch

The base 256GB variant of the Mate X3 starts at 12,999 yuan (approximately $1,895, £1,550, or AU$2,850). An international launch is planned for May, bringing this innovative folding phone to a global audience.
