Hisense’s Giant Leap: Meet the 100-Inch Behemoth

In an industry-shattering move, Hisense has rolled out its massive 100-inch mini-LED TV, effortlessly outflanking competition from the 98-inch category predominantly ruled by TCL, Sony, and Samsung. The model is part of the U7KQ series for the European market and the U8K series for U.S. consumers. While European buyers can anticipate a Q3-Q4 2023 release with a price tag ranging between €3,500-€5,000 (£5,000), the U.S. model will command a retail price of $9,999.

    Specs Showdown: Hisense vs. TCL

Hot on the heels of TCL’s recent 98-inch lineup revelation, which showcased their flagship X955, Hisense brings an alternative to the high-value, large-screen market. The specifications for both the Hisense 100U7K and 100U8K versions are laden with gamer-friendly features, boasting up to a 144Hz refresh rate and twin HDMI 2.1 ports with Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) and Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM). Both models extend broad HDR support, including Dolby Vision and HDR10+, Dolby Atmos, and a 2.1 speaker setup. However, the U.S-centric U8K takes it a notch higher with a 2.1.2 Dolby Atmos speaker configuration.

Hisense’s Platform Play: Vidaa vs. Google TV

While the European U7K model will incorporate Hisense’s proprietary Vidaa platform, the American U8K version will be Google TV-equipped.

Dimming Zones and Brightness: Room for Improvement

When it comes to dimming zones, the Hisense 100U7K trails behind with a little over 1,600, according to DisplaySpecifications, which doesn’t quite match up to the TCL X955’s staggering 5,000 dimming zones. Similarly, peak brightness on the U8K stands at 1,500 nits, falling short of TCL’s 5,000-nit claim.

Market Dynamics: Expanding Choices and Falling Prices

The consumer appetite for large-screen TVs is expanding, making 98-inch screens an increasingly popular choice. Generally, TVs of this size range between $8,000-$10,000. However, with TCL’s recently launched 98-inch S5 retailing at $5,000, and Hisense’s new 100-inch U7K model priced similarly, it’s evident that expansive displays are becoming more budget-friendly, thereby increasing market accessibility.

Gaming and More: What Does Hisense Bring to the Table?

As consumer demand rises, manufacturers are locked in a battle of specifications, particularly in gaming features. Hisense’s 100U7K ticks most boxes in this regard, offering a mini-LED backlight at a competitive price. Is this a strategic move to counter TCL? If so, it’s a win-win for consumers, as intensified competition typically bodes well for buyers.

In the ever-evolving landscape of large-format televisions, Hisense’s entry marks a significant milestone. Though its specs might not fully match up to its competitors, it offers consumers an alternative in a market that’s increasingly demanding bigger and better options. As competition heats up, keep an eye on how this plays out for both the industry and the consumer.
