Google URL Shortening Service to Shut Down
Google has announced the official termination of its URL shortening service, goo.gl. By August 25, 2025, goo.gl links will cease to function, returning 404 errors and becoming inactive. This announcement, made on Google’s developer blog, underscores the need for users to update their existing goo.gl links and seek alternative URL shortening services.
Starting August 23, 2024, goo.gl links will display a warning message, alerting users to the impending deactivation. Google cautions developers that this interstitial page might disrupt link functionality, particularly those involving 302 redirects.
The decision to phase out goo.gl is part of a long-term strategy that began in 2018. Google initially ceased new link creation in 2019, and the final shutdown will mark over six years since the service’s deprecation was first announced.
In a statement, article authors and engineers Sumit Chandel and Eldhose Mathokkil Babu noted, “Today, the time has come to turn off the serving portion of Google URL Shortener.”
For developers looking to maintain link functionality temporarily, Google suggests adding the query parameter “si=1” to existing goo.gl links. However, this is only a short-term fix. The best solution is to transition to other URL shortening services such as Bitly and Ow.ly.
Google initially directed users towards Firebase Dynamic Links (FDL) as an alternative. However, with FDL also set to be deprecated in August 2025, users are advised to find other long-term solutions.
As the countdown to the shutdown continues, Google emphasizes the importance of migrating to other services to avoid disruptions. The closure of goo.gl is a significant step in Google’s ongoing effort to streamline its services and focus on more sustainable, long-term solutions for developers and users alike.
