Google Plans to Incorporate Conversational AI into Search

Integrating GPT-like features to compete with rivals and expand search capabilities

Google’s CEO, Sundar Pichai, revealed in an interview with The Wall Street Journal that the company plans to add conversational AI features to its flagship Search product. Although Google previously announced its intention to integrate large language models (LLMs) into search, this is the first mention of incorporating conversational capabilities.

Competing with Microsoft’s Bing and ChatGPT

This move comes as no surprise, especially after Microsoft introduced a version of its Bing search engine that utilizes OpenAI’s ChatGPT AI engine. With Google holding a 93.4% global share of the search market, the impact of its implementation could be significant.

    Expanding the Search Business

Pichai sees AI chat as an opportunity to grow the search business rather than a threat, saying, “The opportunity space, if anything, is bigger than before.”

Catching Up in the AI Race

Although no specific timeline for chat AI integration into search was provided, it is evident that Google is trailing Microsoft in this area. When OpenAI released ChatGPT, Google deemed it a “code red” as it posed an existential threat to its core business.

    Google’s Efforts with Bard

Google introduced its conversational AI, Bard, as a standalone chat product separate from Search. However, Bard lagged behind ChatGPT, even displaying incorrect answers in a Twitter advertisement. Pichai recently suggested that Google would shift to a more “capable” language model to close the gap.

Collaboration and Innovation Amid Job Cuts

Despite job cuts aimed at achieving Pichai’s goal of 20% greater productivity, Google is accelerating work on new AI products. The company plans to foster increased collaboration between divisions like Google Brain and DeepMind, its two primary AI units, to boost efficiency in more compute-intensive projects.
