New data from Canalys reveals that Google managed to ship 880,000 Pixel Watch units in Q4 2022, pushing the company to second place in the market and surpassing Samsung.
Pixel Watch Grabs 8% Market Share in Q4 2022
According to the Canalys report, the Pixel Watch’s debut saw enough units sold in its first three months to capture 8% of the total market share, edging out Samsung, which fell to 5.9%. Apple, on the other hand, maintained its dominant position as the market leader, accounting for almost 28% of all wearable shipments. While the Pixel Watch approached 1 million units shipped, Apple managed to move just under 14 million units during the same timeframe.
The accuracy of these figures is supported by the Google Pixel Watch app surpassing 500,000 downloads, which suggests that most of the devices in circulation have been sold.
Google’s Wearable Figures Bolstered by Fitbit Sales
It’s worth noting that Google’s overall wearable numbers are also supported by Fitbit sales. Although no specific details are available about the most popular Fitbit devices, they appear to account for approximately 3 million of Google’s shipments.
However, as Google continues to limit Fitbit smartwatches by removing community features or disabling the use of third-party apps, it’s expected that the Pixel Watch will close the gap in future generations.
Challenges Ahead for the Pixel Watch 2
To achieve this, Google must address several issues with the Pixel Watch 2, including the lackluster battery life found in the first model.
In addition to enhancing its own device and overcoming in-house competition, Google also needs to contend with rivals like the Apple Watch Series 9 and Samsung Galaxy Watch 6, which are expected to launch before the Pixel Watch 2 and offer their own set of improvements.
