GM to Replace Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in EVs
Android Automotive will be offered instead
GM will phase out Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with its upcoming electric vehicles, starting with the 2024 Chevy Blazer EV, according to GM digital chief Edward Kummer and executive cockpit director Mike Himche in a Reuters interview. Instead, the company will install Android Automotive and its apps for smartphone connectivity in its upcoming electric cars. However, GM will continue to offer CarPlay and Android Auto in combustion engine models and will not discontinue the use of these features in existing EVs.
The company claims that Android Automotive provides more control over the experience for users. The platform also provides eight years of free Google Assistant and Google Maps use at no extra charge, according to GM. However, the company has not stated what users will have to pay if they continue to require those functions afterward. Kummer also acknowledged that there are “subscription revenue opportunities.”
Android Automotive is rapidly gaining popularity, with companies such as BMW, Honda, Polestar, Stellantis, Volvo and VW adopting it with or without Google apps. However, GM is deliberately dropping Apple CarPlay and Android Auto features. The move could lead to the development of innovative driver aids, but it could also force drivers to mount their phones if there is an app or function the EV’s infotainment system doesn’t support.
According to Himche, GM is introducing upcoming driver assistance technologies that are “more tightly coupled” with navigation features, and the company doesn’t want them to require a smartphone. GM plans an all-electric passenger vehicle line by 2035, and it believes Android Automotive will help it achieve its goals.
The decision is a significant blow to Apple, as its services may not have native support in GM EVs. The iPhone maker is also developing a next-gen CarPlay experience that can take over the entire dashboard, but GM has now ruled itself out as a potential customer. Apple may have to turn to other automakers if it wants to have more control over your drive.
