    Epic Games Store Introduces Self-Publishing for Developers

    Self-Publishing Made Simple on the Epic Games Store

    Epic Games has made it significantly easier for game developers to launch their creations on the Epic Games Store by introducing long-awaited self-publishing tools. This new feature allows any developer to release their games on the platform. While there’s a $100 fee per title and specific requirements to be met, developers will no longer need to go through the previously hand-curated selection process.

    Self-Published Game Requirements

    Self-published games must not contain discriminatory content, pornography, or illegal material. If a title offers online play, it must support crossplay across all PC stores. Furthermore, if achievements are present in other PC stores, Epic Games Store achievements must also be included. The games must meet a baseline quality level that aligns with the description shown to customers, and free age ratings are required in countries where necessary.

    Attractive Revenue Share for Developers

    One of the primary appeals of the Epic Games Store is the higher revenue share it offers to developers. Epic takes a modest 12% cut, whereas its main competitor, Steam, can take up to 30% based on sales figures. Additionally, Epic does not demand a share of in-app purchases made through a non-Epic payment system. This arrangement is particularly advantageous for smaller studios looking to reach a wide audience without sacrificing a significant portion of their revenue.

    Evolution of the Self-Publish Feature

    The self-publish feature has been a long time in the making. Epic first began beta-testing the functionality in August 2021, with an expected launch in 2022. The delay, according to CEO Tim Sweeney, was due to the inherent challenges of developing software.

    Uncertain Future for Developer Adoption

    It remains to be seen whether developers will embrace the Epic Games Store as a result of these changes.  Though Epic announced that its store has over 230 million total users, while Steam reported 69m daily active users in 2021 and remains the largest multi-developer game portal on computers. Moreover, Epic’s requirements are stricter than Valve’s, which only prohibits illegal content and “trolling” attempts.

    Nevertheless, this new self-publishing feature significantly reduces the barriers to entry for Epic’s store, potentially leading to a rapid expansion of its catalog in the near future.
