Epic Games Boosts Fortnite Creator Revenue Share

Epic Games Boosts Fortnite Creator Revenue Share to 40% and Launches Unreal Editor Beta

    Creator Economy 2.0

Epic Games has unveiled a new incentive for creators of custom Fortnite islands – a more consistent revenue stream. The recently launched Creator Economy 2.0 system will distribute 40% of the net revenue from the majority of real-money purchases proportionately among creators, including Epic. This means that creators of popular islands or those that retain users will receive a larger share of Item Shop spending and related transactions.

    Previous Revenue Sharing System

Previously, Fortnite creators were provided with special codes that they had to share with their fans in order to receive a 5% cut of their purchases. However, this method was only effective if players were aware of the code. Consequently, some creators resorted to aggressive promotional strategies, such as constant promotion during livestreams or designing islands centered around the code concept.

    Signing Up for Economy 2.0

Creators can join Economy 2.0 through a dedicated portal. Those with existing islands who sign up on or before April 21st will receive payments for engagement retroactive to March 1st. To be eligible, individuals must be at least 18 years old and have a Fortnite account that is a minimum of 90 days old. Companies can also participate.

Beta Release of Unreal Engine for Fortnite

In addition to the revamped revenue sharing system, Epic Games is launching a free public beta of the Unreal Engine for Fortnite. This will ultimately provide most of Unreal Engine 5’s tools to creators developing islands, games, and other experiences within the popular game. Creators will be able to edit maps, environments, and game mechanics, leading to more unique and polished third-party projects.

Rationale Behind the New Payout System

The shift in payouts doesn’t come as a surprise. According to Activeplayer.io, Fortnite’s average monthly player counts have been steadily declining since peaking in 2020 and 2021. Economy 2.0 aims to assist Epic Games by rewarding creators of sought-after islands. To some extent, this move is also about staying competitive with rival platform Roblox. As many companies are building islands on Roblox to attract younger users, Epic’s strategy could help retain both brands and gamers.
