E3 2023 Called Off as Major Gaming Industry Players Withdraw

No Digital or Physical Event for E3 2023

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced the cancellation of E3 2023, as major gaming companies like Microsoft, Nintendo, and Ubisoft withdraw their presence from the event.

    ESA Announces Cancellation

According to IGN, the ESA has started notifying members that E3 2023 will not take place, as it failed to generate enough sustained interest to create an event that showcases the gaming industry’s strength and impact. The ESA confirmed the cancellation on Twitter and released a statement from ReedPop’s Global VP of Gaming, Kyle Marsden-Kish.

    Difficult Decision Amid Industry Challenges

Marsden-Kish expressed regret over the decision, acknowledging the effort put forth by partners to make the event happen. He cited the lack of playable demos and resourcing challenges as reasons companies could not participate in E3 this year. ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis further explained to GamesIndustry that the COVID pandemic had altered game development timelines, leading to fewer demos being ready in time for the event.

Changing Marketing Strategies and Event Preferences

Pierre-Louis also noted shifts in marketing plans and a growing preference for digital events among game companies. When asked about E3’s future, he emphasized the ESA’s commitment to providing a marketing and convening platform for the industry but acknowledged that the event’s format would need to evolve to meet the needs of companies and players.

June Still Holds Promise for Gaming News

Despite E3’s cancellation, gaming enthusiasts can expect news and announcements throughout June. Ubisoft has already announced plans for its own event, while Nintendo and PlayStation usually host digital events during that month. Microsoft had committed to participating in E3’s digital show and might still reveal news despite the event’s cancellation. Additionally, Geoff Keighley’s Summer Game Fest is set to take place on June 8th in Los Angeles.
