Copilot+ PCs: A New Era in AI-Powered Computing
On May 20, 2024, Microsoft held a special event at its new campus to introduce a revolutionary category of Windows PCs: Copilot+ PCs. These cutting-edge devices are designed to harness the power of artificial intelligence, offering unprecedented performance and capabilities that set a new standard in personal computing.
In many ways, Copilot+ PCs represent the pinnacle of Microsoft’s advancements in AI and hardware integration. Boasting powerful new silicon capable of over 40 trillion operations per second (TOPS), these PCs promise all-day battery life and access to the most advanced AI models available. This leap in technology allows users to perform tasks that were previously unimaginable on a personal computer. Key features include Recall, Cocreator, and Live Captions, which enable enhanced productivity, creativity, and communication.
These state-of-the-art devices are not only powerful but also beautifully designed. The initial lineup of Copilot+ PCs includes offerings from Microsoft Surface as well as OEM partners such as Acer, ASUS, Dell, HP, Lenovo, and Samsung. Pre-orders are available now, with prices starting at $999 and availability beginning on June 18.
New Architecture
Copilot+ PCs feature a completely reimagined system architecture that integrates the CPU, GPU, and a new high-performance Neural Processing Unit (NPU). This integration, combined with the large language models (LLMs) running on Microsoft’s Azure Cloud and small language models (SLMs), delivers unprecedented performance. These PCs are up to 20 times more powerful and 100 times more efficient in running AI workloads compared to previous models. They also outperform Apple’s MacBook Air 15” by up to 58% in sustained multithreaded performance, while still delivering all-day battery life.
Enhanced Security
Security is a top priority for Microsoft, and every Copilot+ PC comes equipped with the Microsoft Pluton Security processor enabled by default. Windows 11 on these devices includes new features and updates designed to make it easy for users to stay secure, along with personalized privacy controls.
AI Experiences
Copilot+ PCs leverage powerful processors and state-of-the-art AI models to unlock new experiences directly on the device. One of the standout features is Recall, which allows users to access virtually anything they have seen or done on their PC, providing a photographic memory-like experience. This feature organizes information based on relationships and associations unique to each user, making it easier to find what you’re looking for quickly and intuitively.
AI-Powered Creativity
With Cocreator, users can generate and refine AI images in near real-time directly on their devices. This feature combines text prompts with ink strokes to create new images, allowing for iterative artwork that evolves alongside the user’s input. Additionally, the Restyle Image feature enables users to transform personal photos with new styles, combining image generation and photo editing in innovative ways.
Partnerships
Microsoft has partnered with leading application developers to enhance the AI capabilities of Copilot+ PCs. Adobe’s flagship apps, including Photoshop, Lightroom, and Express, are now available on these devices, with additional apps like Illustrator and Premiere Pro coming soon. Other applications like DaVinci Resolve Studio, CapCut, Cephable, LiquidText, and djay Pro also benefit from NPU-accelerated features.
Live Captions
In today’s globalized world, effective communication is essential. Live Captions on Copilot+ PCs offer real-time translations of any audio passing through the device, supporting over 40 languages. This feature ensures that users can understand and be understood across different languages and contexts.
Next-Generation Windows Studio Effects
Windows Studio Effects have been enhanced to ensure users look and sound their best during virtual interactions. New features include portrait light adjustments, creative filters, eye contact teleprompter, voice focus, and portrait blur, all designed to improve the user’s appearance and audio quality during video calls.
Every Copilot+ PC includes a powerful AI assistant, accessible via the new Copilot key on the keyboard. This assistant provides users with advanced AI models, including the latest from OpenAI, enabling natural voice conversations and enhanced productivity.
Microsoft is committed to developing ethical, safe, and secure AI technologies. All AI features on Copilot+ PCs adhere to Microsoft’s responsible AI principles, ensuring user safety and privacy.
