ChatGPT’s Web Browsing Abilities Unlock New Features
OpenAI Introduces Game-Changing ChatGPT Plugins
Expanding Chatbot Functionality with Access to Live Data: ChatGPT, the popular AI chatbot, has received a significant upgrade, as OpenAI announced the gradual rollout of plugins to enhance its functionality.
We've written plugins for browsing & Python code execution (amazing for data science use-cases), launched with 11 partners, and have open-sourced a high-quality plugin for retrieval over any data you'd like to make accessible to ChatGPT:https://t.co/4ajOg7ooRQ

The first series of plugins, now available in alpha to a limited group of ChatGPT users and developers, allows the chatbot to access live data from the web, including third-party sources such as Expedia, Kayak, and Instacart. Previously, ChatGPT could only provide information from its training data, which was up to date only until 2021.
OpenAI likens plugins to the “eyes and ears” of language models, enabling access to information that is too recent, personal, or specific for the training data. This allows ChatGPT to answer questions about current events and other timely information.

Leveraging Browser Plugin for Enhanced AI Interaction
Access to Real-Time Information Transforms ChatGPT’s Abilities: The browser plugin lets ChatGPT display the sources from which it gathers information before generating an answer. This new functionality enables the AI chatbot to provide current information, such as comparing box office sales of recent Oscar winners with other films released around the same time.
Sam Altman, OpenAI co-founder, tweeted that while plugins are experimental, they have been a much-requested feature.
The Power and Risks of AI Chatbots with Internet Access
Balancing Benefits and Potential Harmful Effects: Although AI chatbots like ChatGPT can offer various benefits, OpenAI’s research shows that internet access for chatbots can pose risks, such as quoting unreliable sources or facilitating harmful actions. To address these risks, OpenAI has implemented safeguards and initially limited access to a small group of users and developers.
Showcasing ChatGPT’s New Capabilities with Plugins
Meal Planning and Travel Booking Made Easy: OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman demonstrated how to use ChatGPT’s Instacart plugin for meal planning in a video posted on Twitter. With just a few prompts, the chatbot recommended a chickpea salad recipe and added the ingredients to Instacart for purchase.
Expedia’s Twitter account shared a video showing how to use the Expedia plugin to turn ChatGPT into an AI travel agent, assisting with booking flights and hotels – a task that was previously impossible for ChatGPT.
The Future of ChatGPT Plugins and Developer Creativity
Addressing Risks and Encouraging Innovative Applications: Sam Altman expressed excitement about the variety of tasks plugins can help with and the creations developers will come up with. OpenAI is taking a cautious approach by offering access to a limited group and implementing safety measures. Interested parties can join a waitlist to access ChatGPT plugins.
