The 43-Year-Old Ex-Square CTO Leaves a Legacy of Innovative Technologies
Bob Lee, the brains behind Cash App and former Square executive, was reportedly stabbed to death in the early hours of Tuesday in San Francisco. A 43-year-old victim was discovered with “apparent stab wounds” by the San Francisco Police Department, and later died at the hospital. The attacker remains at large.
MobileCoin, where Lee recently served as chief product officer, confirmed his death through CEO Joshua Goldbard. Goldbard paid tribute to Lee’s contributions, saying, “Bob was a force of nature. Helped to birth Android and CashApp into our world,” and added, “Moby was his dream: a privacy protecting wallet for the 21st century. I will miss him every day”.
Jack Dorsey, CEO of Square’s parent company Block, expressed his grief on Nostr, stating that Lee’s passing was “real. Getting calls. Heartbreaking. Bob was instrumental to Square and Cash App”.
Lee’s illustrious career began with his work on the core library development for the early Android mobile operating system, as reported by TechCrunch. He later joined Square to develop their Android app, eventually becoming the CTO and creating Cash App. Lee was an active investor, having invested in several startups. He also assisted the World Health Organization with their mobile app during the COVID-19 pandemic.
