Canon Unveils the EOS C400 Cinema Camera and CINE-SERVO 17-120mm Lens
Canon has made a significant announcement that is bound to excite filmmakers and videographers: the introduction of the Canon EOS C400 Cinema Camera and the CINE-SERVO 17-120mm Cinema Lens. The Canon EOS C400 Cinema Camera: A Robust Tool for Professionals
The Canon EOS C400, the latest addition to Canon’s line of cinema cameras, is designed with the needs of professional filmmakers in mind. Building on the legacy of previous models like the C200, C300, and C500, the C400 maintains the familiar ergonomic design but with several key improvements.
Ergonomic and User-Friendly Design
The C400 is crafted for single operators, with crucial controls positioned on the operator side for easy access. Notably, the audio level controls have been moved to the operator side, enhancing usability. The camera features a multifunction hotshoe that supports various accessories without additional wires. The included top handle extends these hotshoe capabilities, offering flexibility in rig configurations.
Equipped with a newly designed sensor, the EOS C400 offers 6K resolution and 16 stops of dynamic range. It boasts a triple base ISO system with optimal results at ISO 800, 3200, and 12800, making it versatile for varying lighting conditions. This makes it an excellent choice for documentary filmmakers who often face challenging environments.
The camera supports dual card slots: a CFexpress Type B slot for 12-bit 6K Canon Cinema RAW Light and a standard SD slot for proxy recordings or separate audio recordings. Users can choose between three levels of Cinema RAW Light (HQ, ST, and LT) and can record in 6K up to 60 fps, with higher frame rates available at lower resolutions. Additionally, the camera can record 10-bit 4:2:2 in XF-AVC format.
The EOS C400 incorporates Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II, ensuring fast and accurate autofocus. New features include an interval timer mode for time-lapse creation and an Auto Clear Scan Setting to eliminate flicker from screens and LEDs.
The camera uses a new battery, the BPA 60N or the larger BPA 90N, while still supporting older BPA batteries with some limitations. Internal features include anamorphic desqueeze capabilities and built-in neutral density (ND) filters ranging from 0 to 10 stops.
The EOS C400 is equipped with comprehensive connectivity options, including 12G-SDI and 3G-SDI outputs, full-size HDMI, Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and support for SRT protocol for IP streaming. It also includes DIN connectors for timecode, genlock, and return video, making it suitable for live productions. The camera has a dedicated 12-pin lens terminal for broadcast and cine-servo lenses.
The CINE-SERVO 17-120mm Cinema Lens
Alongside the EOS C400, Canon has introduced the CINE-SERVO 17-120mm Cinema Lens, which comes in RF and PL mount options. This lens builds on Canon’s CINE-SERVO line, offering a versatile zoom range and high-quality optics. It supports ZEISS eXtended Data and ARIA in the PL mount version, enhancing its compatibility with professional setups.
While the EOS C400 is packed with features, there are a few additional considerations. The camera does not include an electronic viewfinder (EVF), so users will need to rely on the LCD screen or invest in a third-party EVF. Additionally, the audio ports are mini-XLR, which might require adapters for full-sized XLR microphones.
Availability
The EOS C400 is set to ship in September 2024 with a retail price of $7,999. The CINE-SERVO 17-120mm lens will be available in October 2024, priced at $23,850. Canon also offers a Mount Adapter PL-RF, available in September 2024 for $1,599, allowing users to connect PL mount lenses to the C400.
