Microsoft’s search engine, Bing, has reached a milestone of 100 million daily active users a month after the release of its chatbot AI. Yusuf Mehdi, Microsoft’s VP for Modern Life, Search and Devices, acknowledges that the company is still a “small, low, single digit share player,” but the boost in numbers is a clear indication that search is due for a reinvention. Bing’s unique combination of Search + Answers + Chat + Creation in one experience is proving to be a winning formula for new and existing users alike.
According to Mehdi, one-third of Bing’s daily active users are new to the search engine, with a growth in engagement and more searches being conducted. Microsoft attributes this growth to the introduction of its Prometheus AI model, which has made Bing’s search results more relevant. The company also cites Edge’s growth in usage, likely aided by the addition of Bing’s chat AI as a new feature.
Bing’s chat AI has been a game-changer for the search engine, with around one-third of its daily preview users using it for their queries every day. On average, Microsoft is seeing three chats per session, with over 45 million chats since the launch of the new Bing. Additionally, 15 percent of all chat sessions have resulted in new content being generated. The introduction of Bing’s AI chatbot on mobile has also led to a six-time increase in daily active users from before its availability.
By integrating an AI chatbot into Bing, Microsoft has given its search engine the competitive edge it needs to compete against Google. While Google plans to launch a chatbot of its own, called Bard, Bing’s chatbot AI has already proven successful. Despite some initial missteps, Google is working to improve the chatbot’s responses before its official launch.
