Apple M4 Chip Sets New Highs

Apple M4 Chip Sets New Highs in Benchmark Performance

Apple’s recently unveiled M4 chip is demonstrating extraordinary prowess in single-core performance, surpassing other leading processors in the market, including the Intel Core i9-14900KS. According to recent Geekbench 6 CPU benchmark results, highlighted by Tom’s Hardware, the Apple M4 chip in the latest iPad Pro lineup achieved impressive averages of about 3,800 points, comfortably outstripping Intel’s score of 3,100.

    Architecture

The M4 chip boasts a 10-core configuration, combining four performance cores and six efficiency cores, alongside a 10-core GPU and a significantly upgraded 16-core Neural Engine, which delivers 38 TOPS (trillion operations per second). This design is tailored to enhance performance by 50% over the previous M2 processor found in older Apple products, including the latest iPad Air models, MacBooks, and iMacs from 2022. Apple’s enhancements include advanced branch prediction, next-generation machine learning accelerators, and a deeper execution engine.

    Comparison

While the M4 chip’s multi-core performance didn’t stir as much excitement as its single-core results, the achievement marks a notable instance where mobile technology not only competes with but also surpasses desktop capabilities. This leap is further highlighted by advancements in AI computing within the industry, with competitors like AMD and Intel also focusing heavily on AI-enhanced processors. The AMD Ryzen AI 9 HX 170, for example, is expected to feature an NPU capable of up to 77 TOPS, while Intel’s Meteor Lake has made its debut in laptops.

    Impact

It’s still early to gauge the full impact of the iPad Pro’s capabilities, particularly with the introduction of the “Tandem OLED” display pushing tablet design forward. However, the initial benchmarking reports are promising. The true benchmark of the M4 chip’s capabilities will become clearer as more software becomes optimized for it and as the competitive landscape evolves with upcoming releases like Intel’s Arrow Lake. For now, Apple has clearly signaled that its latest tablets are more than capable of holding their own against traditional x86 architectures in the high-performance arena.
