Apple Begins Corporate Layoffs Amid Broader Tech Industry Cuts

Apple Begins Corporate Layoffs Amid Broader Tech Industry Cuts

Apple has begun implementing a small number of layoffs within one of its retail teams, as reported by Bloomberg and Business Insider. Although the exact number of affected employees remains unclear, it is believed to be very limited. Apple is internally framing the move as an operational improvement rather than a cost-cutting measure.

In contrast to major tech companies that have announced significant job cuts, Apple has so far managed to avoid large-scale layoffs:

    • Google: 12,000 jobs
    • Amazon: 27,000 jobs
    • Meta: 21,000 jobs
    • Microsoft: 10,000 jobs

Though Apple’s layoffs appear to be much smaller in scale, it seems the company can no longer claim to be immune from job cuts.

According to recent reports, the positions being eliminated are within the division responsible for construction and maintenance of Apple’s retail stores. Impacted employees have been given until the end of the week to apply for alternative roles within the company. Bloomberg states that Apple is offering up to four months of severance pay for those unable to secure new positions.

While these layoffs are the first reported cases of full-time employee terminations at Apple since the widespread tech industry cuts began, the company has been reducing costs in other ways. CEO Tim Cook told The Wall Street Journal that layoffs were considered “a last resort”. Bloomberg reported last month that Apple has been cutting contractor positions, leaving some newly available positions unfilled, and slowing down hiring in certain departments. Additionally, Apple has delayed bonuses, reduced travel budgets, postponed projects, and implemented other cost-saving measures.
