Android 14’s Predictive Back Gestures Promise Big Changes in Navigation

Android 14 – Predictive Back Gestures Promise Big Changes in Navigation

Android 14 is set to revolutionize gesture navigation, promising to make it easier for users to understand where the back gesture will take them next. Google has already made the new back gesture official since last year, and with the release of Android 14 Developer Preview 2, a few system apps finally work with the new back gesture, allowing users to use the new predictive back gestures.

To experience the new predictive back gestures, users need to enable them in the developer options after installing the preview release on their Pixel phone. Once enabled, users can navigate through the system settings and Google News with predictive back gestures that show the next screen they will navigate to. This feature works for different sections within the same app and shows the next step when bringing users to another application or the home screen.

Moreover, Android 14 DP2 adds a redesigned back navigation arrow that sits in a Material You-themed bubble that stretches and moves as users drag their finger from the side of the screen. While the predictive back gestures look impressive in the demos, it is still in the early stages. In some instances, the next screen doesn’t reliably trigger, and canceling the back action by moving a finger back to the edge of the screen sometimes results in full system crashes.

In conclusion, Android 14’s predictive back gestures offer a new level of convenience for users. While there are some hiccups in the feature’s reliability, it’s only a matter of time before Google perfects it. With the redesign of the back navigation arrow, Android 14 DP2 provides a more modern and visually appealing user interface.
