Amazfit T-Rex Ultra: A Rugged Outdoor Smartwatch

Amazfit T-Rex Ultra: A Rugged Outdoor Smartwatch

    Amazfit’s T-Rex Ultra

As the wearables industry unveils its response to the Apple Watch Ultra, Amazfit has launched the T-Rex Ultra, a new outdoor smartwatch targeting premium adventurers. Following Garmin’s AMOLED Forerunner 265 and Forerunner 965 and the rumored high-end Huawei smartwatch, Amazfit’s T-Rex Ultra makes a bold statement in the market.

Military-Grade Durability and 1,000-Nit AMOLED Display

The T-Rex Ultra features a 316L stainless steel case boasting military-grade toughness and a 1,000-nit AMOLED display. Its design is reminiscent of earlier Fenix models—enormous, oversized, and slightly outdated. The watch is unabashedly huge, making it better suited for larger wrists. While many large watches opt for a titanium build, the stainless steel construction results in a heavier and bulkier device.

Comparing the T-Rex Ultra to the Garmin Epix

Although the Ultra moniker seems to be a direct response to the Apple Watch, the Amazfit T-Rex Ultra is more akin to the Garmin Epix in terms of competition. However, there are only modest enhancements over the already exceptional T-Rex 2.

Improved Mapping and Intelligent Dual-Band GPS

The T-Rex Ultra features upgraded mapping, and users can now upload GPX-guided routes and download offline maps. Similar to Garmin SatIQ, the dual-band GPS intelligently switches modes to conserve battery life. This ensures the watch won’t struggle to find the more accurate but power-hungry L5 satellite signal when it’s not available.

Extended Battery Life and New Endurance Mode

The T-Rex Ultra’s battery life lasts for 20 days in smartwatch mode, and a new mode provides 80 hours of endurance tracking. This mode reduces GPS sampling for long-distance hikes and expeditions.

An Affordable, Feature-Packed Alternative to Rivals

With a price tag of $399/£429, the T-Rex Ultra costs about half as much as the Garmin Epix or Apple Watch Ultra, and its battery life significantly surpasses both. The smartwatch continues Zepp Health’s tradition of offering an extensive list of features at a fraction of the price of its competitors.

A Timely Launch Amid Growing Interest in Outdoor Smartwatches: The T-Rex lineup has always provided an array of features at budget-friendly prices. With the recent surge in interest in outdoor smartwatches due to the Apple Watch Ultra, the T-Rex Ultra arrives at the perfect time. However, its enormous and heavy case and outdated design do come with considerable trade-offs.
